James L. Carter
February 27, 1927 - August 21, 2009
James L. Carter passed away on August 21, 2009 at Spanish Oaks Retreat where he had been a patient for five weeks. Jim was born February 27, 1927 in Darlington, S.C. to Virginia and Spain Carter. He graduated from Westfield N.J. High School and entered the Army Air Corp serving in Italy near the end of W.W. II. He married Dorothy Lois Holmes in 1949 and worked at the Esso Bayway Refinery, studying chemistry at night and earning his degree from Rutgers. Jim had a long and successful career with Esso/Exxon Research and Engineering. He retired Exxon in 1985 as a Senior Research Associate with his name on more than 37 patents.
In 1973 he married Mary Hanrahan in Westfield, N.J. where they lived until 1985 when they both retired and moved to The Landings on Skidaway Island in Savannah, Ga. where he enjoyed golf, fishing, and boating for many years. Jim was an avid fisherman and enjoyed annual trips to Ontario, Canada for many years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Craig Carter who lives with his wife, Karen O'Connell in Conifer, Colorado and her children, Kyle Potts, of Breckenridge, CO and Kelly Potts, of Maui, Hawaii. He is also survived by his brother, Harry Carter and his wife, Elaine, of Clermont, Ga. and their sons, Phillip, of Austin, Texas, and Michael, of Mosinee, Wisconsin. Also surviving are Mary's children, Dr. Linda Hanrahan and her husband, Dr. Nick Paley, of Vestal, N.Y., Nancy Hanrahan Kayatta and her husband Paul, of Vienna, Va. and John Hanrahan, III, of Ithaca, N.Y. Jim is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Jesse Kayatta, of Vienna, Va., Kristen Kayatta Baldwin, of Vienna, Va., Emily Mauro, of Washington, D.C., Evan Hanrahan, of New York City, Tess Hanrahan and Riley Hanrahan, of Ithaca, N.Y.
A Memorial Mass will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 24, 2009 at St. James Catholic Church.
Burial will be at St. Catherine's Rural Cemetery in Addison, N.Y. at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Spanish Oaks Retreat or the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
